When I started my journey in BBYO, I was introduced to a ton of members who would play significant roles in my chapter, including my chapter's N'siah, the president, and S'ganit, the vice president. Everything seemed quite straightforward until I was introduced to our chapter's "beau," a term that left me somewhat perplexed. You see, my initial understanding of BBYO was that it was an all-girls chapter, so the presence of a lone male figure among us was a little unexpected. Nevertheless, I decided to go with the flow. The true significance of the "beau" role didn’t become apparent until the following semester, with the announcement of an event called "Nom Pickup."

Beaus, Sweethearts, and Moteks, as they are known in various regions, play an essential role within BBYO. 

The process through which they are selected is particularly structured and traditional in the NTO (North Texas-Oklahoma) and LSR (Lonestar) regions. Juniors step up to become "noms," short for nominees, during the early fall months. Following this, a slightly mysticized process takes place where, based on both the noms' preferences and the chapter's choices, they are assigned to a specific chapter. In Lonestar, this assignment brings with it many surprises since the actual algorithm used is run by the regional director, adding an element of excitement and anticipation to the whole process.

After the designated "nom period" has passed, all members of the chapter participate in a collective vote to select the new sweetheart or beau. The individuals chosen to hold these coveted positions serve for a year, but their impact is immeasurable. They become role models to younger members, beloved figures in the chapter, and connecting forces within the regional BBYO community. As an added bonus, they tend to bring delicious treats like cookies and brownies to various chapter events, further endearing themselves to their fellow members.

Now, I’m a junior myself. Having watched three generations of sweethearts and beaus, my own nom pickup event took place today. While I still have two months of "nomming" ahead of me, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement. The opportunity to experience BBYO in a whole new way, through the lens of this tradition and the potential to become a sweetheart, is truly exhilarating. As I embark on this journey, I look forward to the camaraderie, leadership, and delicious baked goods that lie ahead in my role as a nominee in this rich and vibrant BBYO tradition.
